Webinar: How The Bahamas Coral Gene Bank is Saving Reefs

The coral reefs of The Bahamas are more than just a beautiful sight; they are the backbone of our marine ecosystem. However, they are currently facing an unprecedented threat from Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD). In our latest webinar, "From Wild Reef to Ex Situ System," we explored a groundbreaking solution: The Bahamas Coral Gene Bank.

A New Home for Coral Resilience

Located at Atlantis Paradise Island, this state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind in the region. Led by experts from Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS), the Gene Bank provides a biosecure environment where corals rescued from the wild can thrive.

Why Ex Situ Conservation Matters:

By moving corals into land-based aquaria, we can effectively isolate them from the spread of SCTLD while utilizing advanced technology to simulate natural lunar cycles that stimulate coral reproduction and ensure genetic diversity. Furthermore, these corals are not just being stored; they are being meticulously prepared for a future where they can be replanted to restore and revitalize damaged reefs across The Bahamas.

This project is a testament to the power of partnership. The Atlantis Blue Project Foundation is proud to support PIMS in this mission, helping to fund the research and infrastructure necessary to protect our "Blue" heritage.
