Salt, Science, and Survival: Behind the Scenes of Coral Conservation in The Bahamas

Out on the reefs of The Bahamas, coral conservation starts long before anything reaches a tank. It begins with salt on your skin, gear checks at sunrise, and carefully planned dives to sites that still hold the genetic diversity we're racing to protect. Whether we're working along the Exumas or near Andros, every collection is deliberate. Small fragments taken with precision from species hit hard by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, like Dendrogyra cylindrus, now listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List after populations crashed by more than 90% across the Florida Reef Tract and the species was reclassified from threatened to endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2024, and Diploria labyrinthiformis, a brain coral classified as highly susceptible to SCTLD. These aren't just samples; they're living pieces of reef history, each one carrying genetic traits that could determine how well future corals survive warming seas and emerging disease pressures. Getting them safely from ocean to shore is a process built on experience, teamwork, and a deep respect for the ecosystems we depend on, the same conservation work supported by the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation and operated in partnership with the Perry Institute for Marine Science at the Bahamas Coral Gene Bank.
